The design is based on a tapped autotransformer whose switching happens automatically. Actually, it’s a coil with a coil of copper wire. The second element is an electromagnetic mechanism with a slider. Schematically, its operation can be described as follows: If the input voltage to the network decreases, the slider moves up along the tap until a normal value is obtained at the output. If it is lifted, it will move down. Slider – The role of the current collector in the stabilizer is done by graphite brushes. They maintain the output voltage with high accuracy (up to 2%) and their regulation is smooth. These are their main advantages. In some stabilizers, such as those made by UKEO, one graphite brush is used below 27A, and two graphite brushes are used above 27A, which can be customized on demand. The design of the two graphite brushes increases the contact area.
Some electromechanical models over 30 kW can be equipped with an additional transformer. Despite the presence of moving parts, this type of equipment operates quietly. They have high load capacity.
The disadvantage of electromechanical stabilizers is the wear of moving parts. These components require adjustment, maintenance and replacement during operation. They have a slight lag in their response to changes in network metrics. Powerful devices are big and heavy. They have high demands on operating conditions.
