Learn about Servo voltage regulator

Servo voltage regulator is an electronic device that regulates voltage by changing the number of turns of an autotransformer. Structurally, they consist of the following parts: transformers, motors and their control systems. Still used where maintaining accuracy and smooth adjustment of the input voltage is important.

A large autotransformer is the main component of the unit. It can change the transformation ratio to compensate for insufficient input voltage level or reduce overvoltage.

The servo drives the brushes through the required number of turns of the transformer, raising or lowering the level of the AC voltage. In a nutshell, this is how this stabilizer works.

How to maintain?

We would like to draw your attention to the fact that electromechanical stabilizers require frequent maintenance. Preferably quarterly, but at least annually.

What does it have to do with it? First, graphite brushes tend to wear out and form graphite chips or dust. In turn, she is an excellent conductor of electricity. This dust settles and then accumulates between turns. All of these can lead to a short circuit in the transformer. All the consequences that follow, such as overheating or fire.

Therefore, do not be lazy to check the degree of wear of the brushes relative to the brush holder and the contact area of the brushes with the leads of the transformer part.

Second, even during operation, the contacts oxidize and thus burn. In the first case, graphite brush residue can be removed with a vacuum cleaner or a cloth soaked in denatured alcohol. In the second case, deposits and oxides are perfectly removed with a normal eraser.

After completing these operations, you can use fine sandpaper to clean the dust on the carbon brush rails, which can prolong the life of the machine.

Still not working?

If the steps above do not help the stabilizer to return to normal operation, there are other steps you can turn to. For example, at a service center or yourself, you can disassemble a servo drive and change the lubricant in its gearbox, you can hit a limit switch that limits the servo drive. If the stabilizers have been in operation for many years, then also check the expansion of the electrolyte (their surfaces must be flat), the integrity of the varistor, check the control board track finish

Integrity, jumping legs, welding leads, etc.
